Horse Chestnut trees are a feature in the village of Charlton Down in Dorset but not all of them are the same species. By the old chapel, which is now converted into a gym, there are three elegant Indian Horse Chestnut trees (Aesculus indica) with gracefully drooping branches bearing beautiful deep pink flowers; they have a splash of yellow on the petals at this time of year when they have just opened. Close up, the petals seem fibrous – like fine felt or damp rice paper. Very delicate. They are quite different from the ordinary Horse Chestnut flowers (Aesculus hippocastanum).

I am pleased to say that Witchampton is still recognisable from when I was a child. I visit Wimborne a couple of times a year to stay with an art school friend and love that part of the country.
