Almost un-noticeable in the fading undergrowth, looking like they are already dead, the brown and purple flowers of the Stinking Iris (Iris foetidissima) tend to be overlooked by passers-by. When the flowers are spent, large green pods are formed, and when these ripen and split open in the autumn, they reveal beautiful bright orange berries.
That sounds so striking. A buried treasure kind of thing.
