Orkney Shores – Kirkwall Harbour 1

Scroll down to content

Kirkwall Harbour in Orkney on a calm day in June 2018 as the tide was ebbing. Busy with fishing and other work boats setting out to sea via Wide Firth, and home to leisure craft like the yachts with tall masts and rigging that were reflected in the mirror-like surface of the water. The entire area is encircled with large boulders that have been imported from island sources to act as a barrier to coastal erosion of the low lying shore.

  1. Thank you, Jean. The water was dead calm that morning – which was a surprise after the severe weather of Storm Hector a few days earlier.
