The pink seaweed looks like it’s made of plastic. It has such a sheen to it. Collectively, the images look so soft and gentle.

The pink seaweed is Irish Moss or Carragheen. It contains a kind of substance like gelatin that is used as a thickener in cooking – sauces and puddings.

We have Irish Moss here too, but it looks more burgundy and more textured. It’s harvested here in Nova Scotia as well.

The piece of seaweed I photographed had been washed ashore and consequently the colour had probably faded.
