I have just spent a cosy time in a small Welsh cottage on the Penrice Castle Estate in Gower. Approached by a very narrow and winding, steep-sided and tree-canopied old road, it is an adventure to even get there. The sense of history, timelessness, and the wild, was tangible in and around the old stone-built home. In November, the tall leafless trees looming overhead, bare rocks and stone walls. and the damp gullies and banksides alike, are festooned with mosses, lichens, and ferns in abundance. It has an ancient and untouched feel, and it is wonderful to breathe in the damp earthy odours and watch the drops of moisture glisten on everything around.
