It was a dull misty morning on Gower when I spotted a big splash of colour in the dunes at Oxwich Bay. Pink apple blossoms were covering several small trees growing on the slopes of tall fixed dunes. At first I thought the trees had resulted from visitors’ discarded apple cores but on closer inspection I think they could be Wild Crab (Malus sylvestris). Beautiful and unexpected whatever their origin. I will have to return later in the year to look at the fruits to check the ID.
Could very well be European crab apple. By the way, it was ‘Tree of the Year’ in Germany in 2013. 😊
