Cobble-sized water-worn stones and smaller pebbles along the margins and banks of the Durance River demonstrate the force of nature that has broken rocks and smoothed them over the passage of time and length of downstream journey. They will have travelled miles and been carved from areas of differing geology. The accumulations of stones provide a variety of habitats for plants and animals depending on the degree and depth of submersion and its periodicity.
