I always have to resist taking a handful of the smaller pebbles to jumble in my pocket as I walk along.

You know, I do that very thing. Though at the end of the walk I try to remember to toss them back. I’ve developed the feeling that they want to stay on the beach. Even if I collect rocks to bring them home I eventually find myself returning them.

Yes, that seems the right thing to do, Claudia. Many places now prohibit removal of anything from beaches – as a conservation measure.
