The ornamentation is on the underside of the fern frond. The pattern is created by the arrangement of the reproductive parts of the plant. The mature fronds produce spores inside umbrella-shaped indusia attached to the underside of the pinnules of the frond. Each species of fern has a different arrangement of the indusia..

You know, it is utilitarian, but beautiful, and it didn’t have to be that way. I like to think of all the ways nature arranges itself combining these qualities. It seems to me every living thing can be seen this way. Once again, details matter!
