Apart from the beauty and variety at every location after every tide, there is a safety aspect. With careful observation sand ripples and other patterns become a navigation aid. We have some extensive beaches on the Lincolnshire Coast with high banks and deep gullies. These mean you can lose sight of the high tide line or the tide line itself. The direction and type of feature tell me about where the water flows to and from, at what speed and even consistency of the sand.

Thank you very much for that information, Steve. That is useful to know. I think I had realised that sand ripples can reveal many things including the direction of the waves and much else but without understanding the details myself. I know that the information is used in the interpretation of rock formations to understand the type of flow and direction.
