The pebbles on the beach at Budleigh Salterton in Devon are famous. I am always fascinated by smoothed and rounded beach stones like these, and confess to photographing as many as possible while I am visiting as souvenirs of the experience. Here is a small selection of many. They were lying at the east end of the shore as I started my walk. Mainly they were dry or just a bit damp. The colours become intensified when they are wet., Shapes, and rock types vary depending on their shore location. Most of them come from the cliffs at the west end of the beach which date to the Triassic Period. (Click to enlarge the pictures)
I love the smoothness of them. How many thousands and thousands of years does it take to round off stones like that, I wonder?

I have no idea, Emma. Longer if the rocks are harder, I expect.😊

The wonderful BBC radio 4 had a charming programme called “The Pebble In Your Pocket” released in May. As someone who could spend all day looking at pebbles I enjoyed it very much. It’s available on the BBC sound app to download.
