I want to share with you today some images of the things that caught my eye as I walked around the Isle of Portland, which is joined by a causeway over Chesil Beach to the mainland on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast. I take a lot of photographs and try to record many details, so this is the first in a series of such posts recording my impressions as I walked around the Portland coastline.
I started my day by getting the bus to Easton and then walking westwards to the coastal path that runs along the top of the cliffs on the western shore of the Isle of Portland. Once on the edge of the Isle, I looked back to Chesil Beach from above West Weares before turning to follow the path leading southwards in the direction of Portland Bill.
What lay before me was a landscape complex of intriguingly interwoven geology and artefact, with one merging into the other, and both affected by nature and natural processes. The stone walls, arches, tunnels, bridges, and spoil heaps from the days when quarrying was at its zenith, echo and blend with the natural rock formations.
