I am not very familiar with fish identification but I think that these pretty little iridescent fish are possibly Sandeels. They were swimming in a shallow rock pool left by the retreating tide on the seashore at Mumbles on the Gower peninsula in South Wales.
I used the most excellent A Field Guide to the Marine Fishes of Wales and Adjacent Waters by Paul Kay and Frances Dipper (2009) produced for The Marine Conservation Society by Marine Wildlife, ISBN 978-0-9562048-0-6.

Hello Jessica, I was at Saundersfoot on Friday 4th Oct and there were thousands of fish in the surf many becoming stranded after being beached.
The looked a bit different to the ones you photographed and I’ve been told that they were Whitebait.
The rock formations between Saundersfoot and Amroth are also fascinating and I wondered if there’s anyway I could send you some of my inferior photos for you to see/identify?

There were some very high and low tides last week – maybe that brought the fish ashore. My own pictures were taken on the 8th October.
I have never visited the Saundersfoot and Amroth locations but I believe the rock formations are really interesting there. I would like to see your photographs. You could send them by e-mail. I have some reference books that could possibly help me to tell you something about the composition and structure of the rocks. I am fascinated by rocks but I am by no means an expert, just keen to know more.
