Maritime Pine bark: Tree bark pattern and texture in the Maritime Pine, Pinus pinaster, from the north-facing side of the tree (38)

Tree bark textures and patterns in the Maritime Pine (Pinus pinaster). All the images are from the same tree but in the first two of the five photographs shown here  the bark is reddened and the cracks and fissures are filled with moss – these pictures were taken on the north-facing side of the tree. In the last three images the bark is thicker, coloured yellow and the moss is absent from the cracks – these images are from the south-facing side of the tree.

The Maritime Pine is a native of European south-west Atlantic coasts and the Mediterranean where it grows well on poor sandy soils such as those found in heathland and on coasts.
