These photographs show the vertical rock faces on the Isle of Portland in Dorset where I discovered the interesting colours, patterns and textures for the pictures in the earlier post Portland rocks – geological abstract art.
You can see them as you walk along the coastal path at Freshwater Bay on the east side of the island (Ordance Survey Explorer Map OL15 Grid Ref. 691701). These surfaces have been exposed by quarrying activities in the past.
Chemicals and minerals have dissolved out of the rocks, and then oozed from between the strata, before trickling down the vertical rock faces – where they have crystallised into a surface sheet of stained calcite-like material.
