Seatown Walk 1 – Ongoing coastal erosion in the cliffs at Seatown on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, February 2024. On the west side of the beach, looking towards Golden Cap, the cliffs are mostly comprised of medium or dark grey mudstones with silty to sandy materials in the upper part. These mudstones are known as the Green Ammonite Member of the Charmouth Mudstone Formation, and they overlie the Belemnite Stone. They belong to the Lower Lias phase in the Lower Jurassic period, dating to somewhere between 198 – 188 million years ago. Mud slips and slides are a common and frequent feature of this stretch of coastline. The lowermost picture shows large imported boulders placed on the shore as rock armour to protect the buildings at Seatown from wave damage.
