Sometime in my childhood I was told that native Americans used the plants shown in #6 to clean their pots. That made me think that the plant (which I know as horsetail) is also native to the U.S. I was wrong, as I see from Wikipedia just now ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equisetum_hyemale). As kids we enjoyed pulling apart the hollow stems.

Thanks, Markus. Yes, that’s true. This site looked atmospheric and almost pre-historic but also was very different from other, drier places. Lots to learn about it now, and hopefully I’ll return as the weather gets warmer.

Thank you, Linda. That is very interesting. I had not realised prior to this visit that there was a variety of horsetail species growing in different habitats. I was surprised to see Equisetum growing in a depth of water rather than in a damp place. This one is, I think, Equisetum fluviatile, the Water or Swamp Horsetail.
