Sometime in my childhood I was told that native Americans used the plants shown in #6 to clean their pots. That made me think that the plant (which I know as horsetail) is also native to the U.S. I was wrong, as I see from Wikipedia just now ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equisetum_hyemale). As kids we enjoyed pulling apart the hollow stems.

Thank you for this share of a place with so much texture and colour.

Fen habitats have their very own magic, haven’t they?

Thanks, Markus. Yes, that’s true. This site looked atmospheric and almost pre-historic but also was very different from other, drier places. Lots to learn about it now, and hopefully I’ll return as the weather gets warmer.

Thank you, Sandy. I must admit I was fascinated by this lowland fen, and I’m keen to go back as the vegetation grows and flowers with warmer weather.

Thank you, Linda. That is very interesting. I had not realised prior to this visit that there was a variety of horsetail species growing in different habitats. I was surprised to see Equisetum growing in a depth of water rather than in a damp place. This one is, I think, Equisetum fluviatile, the Water or Swamp Horsetail.
