Natural pattern and texture in damp sand at Rhossili BayI never cease to be amazed by the new variations of natural patterns in the sand revealed with each ebbing tide on the vast sandy shore at Rhossili Bay in Gower, South Wales. These photographs were taken in March 2015 and add to the continuing documentation of the array of topographical changes that affect this wonderful beach.

  1. Nicely done Jessica. Very good definition – do you wait for low light for these? I’ve sometimes found the ripples aren’t as clear in my photos as they looked at the time.

  2. Thank you, Adrian. I don’t normally wait for changing light conditions to take pictures although I know that the low-angled and softer light in the early morning and late afternoon produce better images, avoiding the sharp shadows and bouncing light reflections that tend to occur in the middle of the day. I just go out regardless of time of day and weather and snap what I see. The results are variable because of that, and managing to capture natural textures is a bit haphazard. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I often do some minimal editing to improve the sharpness and contrast.

  6. Thank you, Kenneth. Nature certainly results in some spectacular patterns and sculptures – especially the waves which creates new designs on a fresh canvas of the sandy beach with every tide.
