Yes, it seemed a very recent death (maybe just a few hours) – I think it had a broken neck – which is something I have observed in other dead birds on the beach, especially diving birds like gannets. The feathers on this bird were quite dry and unruffled. Although it was sad to see it that way, it seemed a privilege to get so close to see how beautiful it was.

    Of course, not all dead birds and animals look so unspoilt. In fact, most of them are in various stages of decomposition – as you will see in some following posts I have planned. Death is all a natural part of the world around us and photographs like this are useful for informing us about the way things are in the present day environment, and can also be used to help interpret and understand about deaths and death assemblages in the historical past through archaeological excavations, and in the deep past through fossils and trace fossils.
