In contrast to the expanse of white sand on the south side, the west side of Newark Bay in Orkney is predominantly rocky with cliffs, rock platforms and boulders. The sedimentary red rock is part of the Eday Group of sandstones, flagstones and marls from the Devonian age Old Red Sandstone Supergroup. Beach stones and boulders of multiple origins are abundant on the shore as well as outcrops of the bedrock strata, often black with lichen encrustation and supporting populations of seaweed and limpets.
