Iridescent Bacterial Film 9 – Natural abstract pattern in rainbow colours on the surface of water produced by iron-oxidising bacteria in a small beach stream issuing from iron-rich volcanic rocks at Yachats in Oregon, USA. Algae producing oxygen bubbles and partially coated with iron deposits from bacterial activity border the iridescent film.

Hello…I am very interested in the scientific nature of this photo. Is it possible to discuss it further? I am doing some work for a very ill patient who has both algae and biofilm issues. I had not thought of a metallic connection. I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you!

Hi Tracy. I know very little about these iron bacteria other than what I have learnt from the blog of Linda Grashoff. There are some links to her blog and book that you might find useful in the post I wrote many years ago if you would like to look at it. Hope it is helpful. https://natureinfocus.blog/2017/09/21/strange-stream-at-yachats-part-1/
