060 Out on the Causeway – Complex of micro-habitats in seashore limestone with holes in the rocks created by marine polychaetes and molluscs. Some burrows may still have the original occupants; while others are secondarily used by unrelated seashore creatures, which in turn extend and deepen the burrows and hollows by their own activities. Further bio-erosion is also taking place on a microscopic level by epi- and endo-lithic bacteria, algae, fungi, and lichens. Added to this is chemical erosion causing the limestone to dissolve. Photographed on the Worms Head Causeway in Gower, South Wales.
