A few fossils at Mewslade Bay 21 – Fossil coral in Carboniferous Limestone on the beach at Mewslade Bay on the Gower Peninsula in South Wales.

    Here you can see another classic Dibunophyllum coral, this time in partial cross section. The zooid or polyp lived in the top section of the coral, and the top section is easily identified as it has the appearance of a “wagon wheel” or a multi-spoked wheel. In this particular example, the top section is not particularly prominent, and is preserved in a closed and flattened state, but if you look closely, on the right hand side of the specimen you can see a series of small lines all pointing in the same direction which indicates the head area.

It is interesting that the fossils in the rocks often serve as a starting point for crystal-filled fissures that extend outwards from the fossil and not only give a false impression of what has actually been fossilised but also imbue the fossil with a strangely exotic or alien appearance (more noticeable in image 23).
