Outback Bark 16 – Tree bark texture in the Chillagoe District of the Australian outback in Queensland, November 2011.
Hi there,
I’ve seen this type of tree before but don’t know what it’s called. Any chance you know or could find out? I’m hoping to use it for a tattoo idea that I’ve had in my mind for a while but I want to look at lots of photos before I can show an artist. It’s ability to kill off a part of itself to survive is amazing and beautiful! Anyway, let me know what you can?

Hello, Heather. Unfortunately, I don’t know exactly what these trees are but an educated guess would be some sort of gum tree (Eucalyptus) as there are so many species in the outback. The bark of Eucalptus is especially interesting. I love the way the bark peels off and the mosaic of patterns that it makes. There are some more pictures of this type of bark in my blog at
